Attempts to liberalise abortion have exposed the reality of social liberalism
The patronising phrase ‘educate yourself’ is currently being used by many on the Left. The clear meaning of the phrase is that you need to unlearn your wrong opinions and adopt the “right facts” of infallible Leftism.
Considering this arrogance, it is astounding that they fail to educate themselves, and learn a fact any science textbook could tell them – the unborn child is a human being.
Denial of this fact has led to an attempt this week to introduce measures that would have made one of the most liberal abortion laws in Europe and worldwide. Several attempts were made to hijack a Bill designed to tackle the scourge of domestic abuse, the most drastic of which sought to make abortion legal on any grounds for up to 28 weeks of pregnancy. What an absolutely tone-deaf move from such proponents of liberal abortion; to respond to the painful, serious issue of domestic abuse by legislating against society’s most defenceless. We should be relieved that such malevolence was defeated in Parliament.
Yet, despite a pro-life victory, this is only a bump in the road, not the end of the journey towards abortion liberalism. This hasn’t stopped its proponents, but merely slowed them down. In this regard, to quote St John Fisher in his affront to the Protestant Reformation, ‘The fort is betrayed even by those who should have defended it’. Those who have committed this betrayal are unfortunately the usual suspects for social conservatives, the “Conservative” government; during the coronavirus pandemic, government policy has been to permit home abortion for either two years or until the end of the coronavirus crisis.
This victory must be welcomed with relief but accepted as short-lived. If liberalism wins on this issue, it will do so by the backdoor. To fight the policy of the backdoor, we must bring the issue into the light. Both the reality of abortion and the underhand methods used to liberalise abortion laws need to be exposed.
Social liberalism in this country, in fact, has a well-established history of being established by the backdoor. We can see this in the liberal policy wave of the 1960s. The use of Private Member’s Bills of the later 1960s to introduce such measures meant the people never got to express their views on these matters at the ballot box. This week’s amendments serve exactly the same function. The public are deliberately not consulted on such radical measures, as public opinion would only work against them on this issue.
More generally, we could say that social liberals have used the mantra of “educate yourself” for years. It has been forced into legislation by radicals first, and then we are forced to conform into accepting it as standard later.
Social liberalism, symbolised by the movement of abortion liberalism, is quite the opposite of a compassionate creature. It is a determined beast hiding behind the blanket of compassion, and must be treated as such by those who wish to fight it.
