On fatalism

WELL firstly, apologies. Mostly to Michael but also to you, dear reader.

The last time I was scribbling here was before the summer and that feels a long time ago now. I’d like to say the reason for my absence is that I have been ill (which is true – coughing blood is not fun) or because I failed my DELE B2 exam (again, but this time narrowly). But really it is just a crisis of fatalism – particularly when it comes to mass legal and illegal immigration.

Perhaps the worse thing about how awful the UK and Spain – and Europe more broadly – seem to be becoming is that the overwhelming majority of people know the approach of their ‘leaders’ to be suicide. (60 per cent of Spaniards think migration is too high, according to recent polling, even when they are constantly being told they are bigots for wondering if importing millions
